Oil Pump
December 2004
I have know hopefully got all the bits an bobs I need to finish the engine bits. First thing was dismantle all the timing bits (belt etc.) to get the oil pump off. Once oil pump was off I spent about 3 hours trying to scrap all the rubber from the oil seal from the pump. This was because there was a metal bit behind the rubber. The new seal had a little metal band so assumed that this metal bit behind the rubber was part of the pump. I even tried fitting the new seal round it needing a new one! End up giving the seal a whack from the rear and it popped out. Felt completely stupid with myself! Here's what popped out. Even though I felt stupid, I did say to myself that this was one of the reasons for doing a kit car. To learn. So stopped beating myself up about it.
![]() Next job have a look at the oil pump as I've never seen inside before. Open the back cover. The only way I can describe the inside of the oil pump is like those Spiro graph you may have played with as a kid. With the cogged wheels to make drawings. Rubbed all the cogs with engine oil as the manual says prime the pump. Was not sure how much oil to prime but hopefully this will be enough. Nut locked the cover bolts so the pump from the rear looked like this.
![]() Bolted on oil strainer and new "O" ring with a bit of clean oil. 3 bolts and all was fitted.
![]() Used the Rover supplied sealant. Cut the bottle in half and used the little scraper that was supplied to fill the main bearing caps. Fitted oil pump and sump.
![]() Then disaster stuck. I was using the new 3/8 drive torque wench which I had just bought but did not feel the click as on the big 1/2 drive torque wrench. With that one of the sump bolts snapped while tightening. Picture here shows broken bit with drill hole ready for a stud extractor set. I bought the 4 piece Draper set hoping this would do the trick. Amazing when you have the right tools. Broken bolt came out easy. Bolted sump this time noticing the torque wrench "little click" and redone timing belt as before. Installed clutch. just a matter of installing fiction plate and attaching pressure plate on dowels and fixing with 6 bolts.
