As I had never even been near an engine out of a car before, I was quite surprise as to the size in bare form. It was bigger than I expected. It took three hefty guys to left into car and out of car. Found out afterwards that it is because the engine block is made out of cast iron. Laid engine to rest on an old paper palette I had in the garage. When I bought the engine, the seller said the turbo had been dropped. After further investigation and a few phone calls, the turbo was declared unserviceable. The casting had broken and the fins bits chipped off. But this is no problem as I expected the worse and know I would be needing a turbo donor anyway so the turbo could come from this. Pity as it was a new turbo and never been used.
When to see a 5EXI in the making. This was because I wanted to see the car in the flesh closer to home rather that going to Devon first. The car was in it's final stages before being SVA'ed. First impressions:- WOW!!. Looked even better than in the pictures on the web site. It was also a lot bigger than the pictures showed. Took the other half to look as I would need her buy in as well. Her first thoughts and impressions was good. The only sticking point was no doors. This was ok for me but I still needed the buy in from the other half. The guy also said that he got Marlin to soure the donor car, strip it and supply the donor bits as needed.
I bought the build manual for the Shelsley T2 as this used the same engine. And had doors. After pricing up the car and all the different donor bits I was look at the best part of £13000. A bit more than I wanted to pay.
Contacted Marlin to arrange a test drive on the 13/11/2004. While speaking to Mark I mentioned that I had bought the turbo engine. Mark explained that I would need 2 maybe 3 different donor cars to complete the build. I asked Mark if he could buy and supply the parts as needed. Mark said he could for between £850 - £1000. That was a good price as I would not have donor cars I needed to strip. But there was still a sticking point. You may remember the doors. I mentioned this to Mark and he said there was a model being made with doors. This will be near completion when I was going for my test drive.
